Nokia shows detailed samples of N8's camera

Nokia N8 sample photos released

Nokia has released sample images taken by its upcoming Nokia N8 flagship handset. The images are said to be unedited, and represent the 12.1-megapixel camera's capabilities. Each 12-megapixel image has relatively little noise and potentially illustrates why the Nokia camera may beat out the iPhone 4's, which proved superior to both the Droid X and Evo 4G in testing.

The photos, only some of which are shown below, were taken over the course of development, with some being better than others. Nokia promises to bring out more low-light images of still images captured by the device. This part of the camera's capability is still being developed, it said. However, many of the images are considerably cleaner and sharper than from rivals.

Apple in its unveiling of the iPhone 4 accused many phone makers of chasing after megapixel counts rather than the actual quality of the image, but Nokia is expected to have an edge as it claims to have improved both. The N8's sensor is considered roughly as large as that on a dedicated point-and-shoot camera, and it should not only produce less noise but avoid very frequent artifacts such as purple fringing (chromatic aberration).

    Megapixels does not equal quality!

Big whoop. 12.1 megapixels with a lens about 1/16" thick. Doesn't matter how many megapixels there are if the lens is made for a mobile phone camera. It's still going to be crappy. Let me know when Nokia comes out with a phone that has interchangeable Nikon or Canon lenses.

    Nice

The photos look quite nice (for a phone). The shadows and highlights are well-balanced. Now I'd like to see samples of the video it shoots.

Maybe Nokia should focus on the phone part...

Nokia should focus on making usable phones instead of cameras unless they're turning into a Camera company.
