VoLGA Forum outs new specifications for LTE calls

The VoLGA Forum has updated specifications for its Voice Over LTE standard. The new specs include mobile voice and SMS service over 4G, unlike the current standard, which only supports data. The changes will bring with them Voice over LTE via Generic Access (VoLGA) using 3G, HSPA-based networks, with users also getting the option of emergency calls even when there isn't a SIM card.

The new standard will otherwise optimize voice-bearer routing, and the forum has released host APIs for LTE handsets.

The VoLGA Forum is made up of 19 member companies, with Cisco, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung among them.

Other efforts are being made to standardize calls and SMS messages on the LTE data network, including the One Voice initiative from AT&T, Verizon, Alcatel-Lucent, Nokia Siemens, Ericsson and Samsung. [via MobileBurn]
