Apple to hold emergency iPhone 4 press conference Friday

Apple hints at possible major iPhone 4 remedy

Apple tonight sent word of a surprise press conference for this Friday, July 16. The company provided few details and would only say it was related to the iPhone 4. The event should start at 10AM Pacific (1PM Eastern).

The conference is widely expected to revolve around the worsening perception of the iPhone 4's antenna issues, which led Consumer Reports to pass on a recommendation even though it had praise for the rest of the design. Apple's decision to turn the steel frame into the antenna has faced mounting criticism as a technique to improve reception may have created an inherent design flaw that can drop calls or slow data depending on how the phone is held, especially for left-handed users.

Speculation has been that Apple will either have to offer free bumper cases to customers or implement a significant design change in future production runs.

    Emergency?

Why is it an 'Emergency' press conference? Because it makes for a better title?

    I agree with HectorHGM

I read of this upcoming press conference on half a dozen different tech sites -- only macrumors/electronista saw the need to shoehorn "emergency" into the title.

It's all about the drama, baby

Of course there has be SOME sort of bone-chilling buzzword like "emergency" in the title, it's electronista after all.

My take on this: at the press conference, Steve will show the assembled media (& the world) how to hold the damn thing correctly.

Announce release date for second wave?

You know the content of the announcement is mere speculation at this point. It could simply be to announce the release date for the next wave of countries to release the phone.

So far Apple has only promised a release date of July for the second wave of countries (which includes Canada BTW) This could just be the announcement of when the phone goes on sale for these countries. They may not even announce anything about reception problems (though that would seem foolish). It would hardly be described as an emergency announcement if all they are doing is releasing a date for the next round of sales.

It is probably about the second wave.

There is a possibility that they may offer free replacements for anyone with a defective phone if they come into an Apple store to have it tested. I doubt that more than a small percentage of phones are defective but the bloggers with no real job other than blogging feel the need to create a tempest in a tea cup over nothing to get page hits.

This site is no exception to that. I look forward to when macnn.com and electronista gets back to "news" rather than spreading whining blogger fluff like this over and over again.

"It is probably about the second wave"

Seems you haven't been keeping up on the news. Both Consumer Reports and the highly respected Anand at Anandatech have fully documented the issue and considered it severe enough proving it to be a "design defect" and not a few bad sets. Apple has made a mistake this time and will need to account for it or risk losing significant stature and/or facing significant lawsuits.

    iPhone is not a phone

So what if it can't make phone calls. Only dweebs make phone calls anymore.
