Nikon asks for D90 demos back to ready for new cam
Unofficial expectations of a Nikon D90 replacement were fueled today by early word that Nikon is prepping retail for the new model. Multiple reports have come in of returns or delays for the camera and accessories in its class. One retailer talking to Nikon Rumors said all D90 demo units were being returned, while another with backorders for the SB-600 flash was told a replacement is expected by the Photokina shown on September 21.
The details of any possible camera are still vague, but it may be rebadged the D8000 to fit in with the naming schemes of Nikon's mainstream DSLRs. As a competitor to Canon's Rebel T2i, the new camera could be Nikon's first camera beyond the D3x to pass 12 megapixels and would shoot at 16 to 18. It may likewise be the first Nikon camera to shoot 1080p video where every Nikon pro camera has been limited to 720p.
A companion entry-level DSLR may also be in store, as could new lenses and one or more new flashes. Photokina is considered one of the world's largest camera trade shows, and the German event is often the catalyst for major introductions in the weeks before it begins.
