Skype outs SkypeKit beta for Macs, PCs

Skype on Wednesday announced the release of a new SkypeKit Beta Software Development Kit (SDK) for desktop developers. Compatible with Windows and Mac OS X computers, it will let the Skype video, voice and text chat program to be built into nearly any desktop app without the need to download the separate Skype software. Interested desktop developers can sign up for a beta invite, though Skype cautions it will only release a limited number of beta SkypeKits.

The first SkypeKit SDK for Linux-based systems was released late in June. Skype's VoIP and video chat services have previously been confined to dedicated apps such as Skype itself or dedicated third-party clients.
