HP shelving plans for Android tablet

HP won't have Android tablet in 2010

A goal by HP to produce an Android-based tablet has at least been delayed and possibly scrapped, based on leaks today. The device had been planned for the fall but now has been delayed without any updated timeframe. No indication was given by AllThingsD's sources of the direct reasons why.

The stall may amount to a cancellation. HP from the day it announced its buyout of Palm had promised webOS tablets and had immediately cast into doubt any plans for using other operating systems. Although Microsoft has implied otherwise, many including HP itself have downplayed the Windows 7 slate and suggested it might have either been delayed or killed outright for the sake of webOS.

The Windows tablet was originally to be HP's centerpiece, but it's rumored to have faced problems as the insistence on using Microsoft's desktop OS put it at a major disadvantage to the iPad. Being forced to use an Intel Atom cut the battery life in half next to its rival and also required that HP include more RAM and storage to make up for the much larger footprint Windows demands. Android would accomplish the objective but would also conflict with Palm's platform.

Really, this is a no -brainer

I've never work with any Palm devices, but it has its adherents, and overall, a lightweight OS is probably best for a tablet (for now).

Good luck to HP, a strong competitor will only make the iPad better.

Look at what iPhone did for Google (android) and what Android did for the iPhone. I truly suspect the iPhone 4 and iOS4 were partially in response to the Android OS.

    Trot it Out Again, Monkeyboy

Did Ballmer get to keep the one he showed off in January? You know, the one he used in that majorly effective announcement that stole all of the iPad's thunder? A piece of history that truly is history.

Both Microsoft and Google must be heartbroken...

I don't know how well a WebOS tablet would sell for HP, but at least it would stand out from all those Android tablet clones that are supposed to be coming. I'm just happy that every month that a vendor delays its tablet gives Apple a much bigger lead in terms of market share and mindshare. By the time most companies get out their generation one tablets, Apple will be formulating their generation two iPad.

One big problem I think other tablet vendors are going to run into is component supply shortages for certain parts like displays and memory. Apple has probably grabbed a big chunk of future supplies, there's going to be little left for the rest of the tablet industry. It's good leverage for Apple to be sitting at the table holding that $40 billion cash reserve. They could buy up components for an entire year and not even blink.

    ASSTROID

Yes, it's going to be renamed and probably co-branded with Microsoft's product as the ASSTROID.

    Stupid

Absolutely the stupidest thing HP can do at this point. They are going to shutter plans to put out an Android tablet so it does not hurt sales of their WebOS tablet, which no one is going to buy anyway… The very fact that they are killing the Android tablet shows that they KNOW that people would prefer it over WebOS so they are trying to not compete with themselves and still leverage the dogfood they bought and now have to eat. This is some senior exec trying to breathe life into WebOS so he does not look like a moron for recommending HP buying Palm. One bad decision following another...

    Re: Stupid

No, what is stupid is an article talking about a rumor that HP is shelving plans of a tablet, which, in itself, has only been rumored.

At worst you've got an R&D department working on 500 different ideas, many of which will get shelved or killed before they come close to being ready for consideration of release. How is this any different?

    HP's doing the right thing.w91

By buying Palm and webOS, HP is the only other vendor out there, aside form Apple, that can tailor their OS to the hardware they develop. In essence, they're emulating Apple's business model more than any other company, I think. It'll take them a long time, hence the delays, because they're starting from way farther back.
