Leak: iPhone 4 won't be recalled, testing was neglected

iPhone 4 flaw origins revealed by insiders

Apple won't be recalling the iPhone 4 at its event tomorrow, a slip has revealed tonight. While the source didn't rule out free cases or that a fixed version was coming, Apple isn't expected to require that customers replace their existing phones for new ones. The WSJ didn't have insights as to what the focus of the impromptu press conference would be other than the reception problem.

However, the sources elaborated on Apple's advance knowledge of the problem and now suggest that systemic flaws in Apple's testing process resulted in the current criticisms. Jobs' decision to go ahead with the design was prompted by a love of the shape that overrode engineers' complaints, as revealed earlier, but the inability to catch problems came due to Apple's extremely secretive nature, the sources said.

As evidenced in the lost iPhone 4 prototype, Apple's insistence on using disguise cases and other tricks to hide the final form prevented engineers and others from actually holding the bare phone and unintentionally blocking the signal. Also, Apple reportedly not only gave carriers fewer phones to test than they expect from other companies but cut short the time they had to test in order to make the June 24 ship date.

For its part, Apple has already denied the earlier claims and insisted that claims of engineers being ignored were false.

"We challenge Bloomberg BusinessWeek to produce anything beyond rumors to back this up," a spokesperson said of the earlier rumor. "It's simply not true."

    Challenge Unanswered.

I don't suppose the trolls here will have noticed that Bloomberg hasn't answered that challenge.

    Trolls hate reality.

    WHatever.

This probably boiled down to statistical probability. Testing occurred. Anomalies were found. A question was asked: how prevalent will this be in the wild? The answer was probably not very, so they went with it. But, when it comes to Apple and the media, everything is magnified.

Now don't get me wrong, Apple's feet should be held to the fire to hold them accountable. How many "experts" will it take to give a definitive answer: Is the iPhone flawed? You know what, it doesn't matter. At the end of the day, if all those that are dissatisfied with their iPhone return it, Apple will do something to resolve it. You're your own expert.

    Journalistic Short Shrift

Comments like "As evidenced in the lost iPhone 4 prototype, Apple's insistence on using disguise cases and other tricks to hide the final form prevented engineers and others from actually holding the bare phone and unintentionally blocking the signal." are just plain poor journalism in my humble opinion.

This is a HANDHELD device. Any normal company in the phone business would test the device in both real human hands as well as worst case models.

See what the industry actually does:

Oh, please. Name one news service that would answer that challenge. If they're so sure, they should take them to court.

Maybe someone should explain to you how real news is gathered. Information is received and corroborated. Perhaps some of it is even physical (such as memos, meeting minutes, etc). But the reporters are not going to release this information to someone with a 'challenge'. It's called protecting your damn source!

Or are you all just too used to the "Look, I've got a picture of a new Mac! I'm going to post it!" so-called news on these rumor web sites?
