ASUS to claim fastest video ever with dual GTX 480

ASUS is developing a new version of its single video card, dual chipset formula that could outpace even its own Ares boards. The Mars II would be a direct sequel to the original that would mate two GeForce GTX 480 chipsets on a single board. The effect would give it 960 total processing cores and a much larger (though undefined) amount of extra memory, as each chip would have its own set of RAM.

Like with the earlier Mars, it would use SLI on the board itself to pair the chips and would have very high power requirements. Three eight-pin ports would connect to the mainboard to supply the extra power needed above and beyond the already high needs of a single chipset.

Launch information hasn't slipped out for the Mars II, though it may have to ship soon to avoid competing with revisions that replace the GTX 480. [via SlashGear]
