CR says free iPhone 4 cases don't go far enough
Consumer Reports has already shot down Apple's offer of free iPhone 4 cases to solve the phone's reception issues. The testing magazine still declined to give a recommendation as it didn't believe the program reached far enough. It was a "good first step" but wasn't universal and had a set expiry date, CR said.
"Apple has indicated that this is not a long-term solution," the magazine wrote. "It has guaranteed the offer only through September 30th, and has not extended it unequivocally to customers who bought cases from third-party vendors. We look forward to a long-term fix from Apple."
The iPhone 4 is still one of the publication's highest-rated devices in spite of the decision not to recommend it, but the absence of an official seal could both hurt Apple for customers depending on the recommendations and support any competitor that gets a high ranking.
