Sharp to bring 100GB BDXL discs to Japan in July

Sharp on Friday announced it will soon begin shipping 100GB Blu-ray discs based on the BDXL standard in Japan. They use three layers for a capacity of 100GB or, eventually, four layers for 128GB of storage space. Only the smaller discs will be re-writable, however.

The discs, known as VR-100BR1, are thus far only compatible with Sharp's own BD-HDW700 Blu-ray disc recorder. They are meant for PVR applications, and can hold about 12 hours of terrestrial digital TV broadcasts or 8.6 hours of BS digital broadcasting.

They will begin shipping in Japan on July 30, priced at the equivalent of about $58. [via Akihabara]
