BBerry Storm3 leak shows timid upgrade

RIM's one-time iPhone rival the may get its second low-key refresh in as many years if a slip from a presentation is borne out. The Storm3, nicknamed "Odin Refresh," would see little changed superficially from the Storm2 with just a five-megapixel camera, 512MB of RAM and 802.11n Wi-Fi as its upgrades. Most of the changes known by Engadget would be in software, in the form of BlackBerry OS 6 and a new 3G-to-Wi-Fi hotspot router app.

The touch-only phone doesn't have many other details but would still have dual-mode cellular with GSM for roaming. Since OS 6 supports multi-touch, RIM might have to scrap the frequently criticized click-down SurePress screen. It would ship sometime between September and December.

A phone like the Storm3 would mirror RIM's downfall in importance at Verizon. The original was hailed as the solution to the iPhone for both RIM and Verizon, but after it failed to get significant traction was largely tossed aside in favor of Android. Verizon timed the Storm2's release such that it was overwhelmed by the much higher-profile Motorola Droid and has given it much less promotion since when compared to the Android line.

Most of RIM's attention on touchscreen designs may now be spent on the 9800, which has a genuinely new shape but which will arrive on AT&T. [via Engadget]
