Netflix goes beyond US with Canada launch in 2010
Netflix today confirmed its first expansion beyond US borders with a teaser for Netflix Canada. The movie rental firm expects the Internet component of service to start in the fall. No details were given, but Canadians can sign up for a notice of more details in the future.
Electronista has reached out to Netflix for comment on whether or not the service will also include the iPad and upcoming iPhone apps as well as living room hardware, such as Blu-ray players and game consoles like the Xbox 360. Netflix will have to renegotiate Internet deals alongside those for physical Blu-ray and DVD rentals, although at least web-based streaming is expected.
The Canadian launch is the only one outside of the US this year, the company has already confirmed.
The service could have a significant impact in Canada. Many in the country already have a rough equivalent service through Zip.ca, but it lacks Internet streaming of any sort. At least web access has been planned but hasn't received any further details.
