Moto Droid 2 caught running Android 2.2 already
Beliefs that the Motorola Droid 2 would get Android 2.2 from the outset were supported today by a hands-on with the upcoming phone. A pre-release example tested by a reader at Droid-Life has the more recent OS and bears a "VZW" build that indicates it's customized for Verizon. Blur from the Droid X is still on top but here has five home screens instead of the seven on the already shipping phone.
The hardware is said to be very close to that of the original Droid, but the larger, reworked keyboard is said to be "phenomenal" compared to the old model.
Most expect the Droid 2 to ship later in August, which could give Motorola enough time to finalize the release. Launching with Android 2.2 would give it support for Flash 10.1 from the start where the Droid X will need a firmware upgrade for the same treatment. Internal leaks have put its update around the same time as the Droid 2 arrives.
