Microsoft to give Windows Phone 7 devices to every employee

Microsoft using free WP7 to curb iPhone on campus

Microsoft followed in Apple's steps today by promising all employees a free smartphone at its Global Exchange meeting. The move would give as many as 90,000 staffers a Windows Phone 7 device when the first ones ship sometime before the holiday. The company didn't say which company would supply the phones or if it would require that users switch over when at work.

The approach almost exactly mirrors that taken by Apple in 2007. Shortly before it launched the original iPhone, it promised all of its full-time employees a free iPhone to get employees familiar with the platform and reward them for the launch. Microsoft's primary aims are likely the same.

For Microsoft, though, the handouts may also be an attempt to drive out competitors' devices. Until now, it has encouraged workers to carry Windows Mobile devices but has seen many choose to carry an Android, BlackBerry or iPhone instead; the company's well-known Xbox Live Director of Programming, Larry "Major Nelson" Hryb, uses an iPhone. Microsoft has tried similar things in the past when its products compete with others, such as an iPod amnesty bin, with limited success.

    Wow

Good grief! Microsoft can't even think up their own gimmicks and staff perks these days?

    Microsoft. You gotta love 'em.

"Microsoft followed in Apple's steps today"
Took them 3 years to copy another one of Apple's moves. Yup, seems like the usual timing.

"The move would give as many as 90,000 staffers a Windows Phone 7 device"
That should bring numbers up! Wonder why didn't try that with the Kin.

"... reward them for the launch. Microsoft's primary aims are likely the same."
Haha, no. Microsoft's primary aims are most likely not as benevolent. More like "Uh, it seems to have worked for Apple. Let's do the same."

"Until now, it has encouraged workers to carry Windows Mobile devices"
I'd love to hear more about how they *encouraged* people. "Here, try this WinMo phone. It's great. You gotta pay for it though".

    Follow the leader

It is funny to see how Microsoft keeps following Apple's steps. I would love to see the stats on how many employees wind up keeping an alternate device for when they are not around senior management, you know there will be a few still carrying i-Phones.

    They already have iPhones

89,000 of the 90,000 staffers already have iPhones and won't give them up.

    Nope

"Shortly before it launched the original iPhone, it promised all of its full-time employees a free iPhone to get employees familiar with the platform and reward them for the launch."

Apple employees were all distributed iPhones after the launch, not before. About 2 to 3 months after as I remember it, as customers come first. Don't know if they ever got anything more than the original model -- probably only if their original models broke.

Seems like a brief sanity check would have checked the original statement out: if every Apple employee had an iPhone before the product was officially launched don't you think that maybe, someone, somewhere would have leaked the unit?

    Dumpster diving

Tip for the five people in this world who actually want one of these phones (to make a "statement" against the iPhone, no doubt) ... check the dumpsters at MS the day after they do this. I'm guessing there will be rich pickings indeed.
