AT&T ordering 8 million Windows Phone 7 devices?

ATT may be optimistic on WP7 sales

AT&T may be optimistic about its hopes for Windows Phone 7 with a large batch of orders, Altimeter analyst Michael Gartenberg learned Thursday. A reliable source explained that the carrier has ordered eight million devices. It's not clear whether this is over the total lifespan of the devices or only for a certain period.

Gartnenberg also didn't learn which phone manufacturers were involved in the order.

The order is unusually high for Microsoft's mobile platform, which has dwindled in recent months as many have turned to the iPhone, Android or BlackBerry instead. At AT&T, the HTC Pure may have flopped despite receiving major attention as part of the Windows Mobile 6.5 push.

A large order for Windows Phone 7 may also parallel AT&T's increasing acknowledgment that its iPhone exclusivity period will eventually come to an end. It remains heavily dependent on Apple for subscriber gains and may hope to have an alternative when the iPhone is no longer unique to its network.

    nope

That would be suicidal, because MS might just kill it like the Kin.

    Either ...

The good folks at AT&T think they're going to sell 8,000,000 of them shortly after initial release or they're getting ready for the iPhone to be yanked away from them.

Then again, AT&T may have just bought a landfill and discovered that it was a little too big for their needs.

    probalby a lot cheaper

My guess is that these will be a lot cheaper than iphones. If the iphone cost the same as other phones, it would be 4x more popular.

    The possibility is

that AT&T ordered 8 million? More like like 2-3 million is likely the range and over a period of time. It would be pure speculation on their part that customers will drop the iPhone or any other OS phone for MS. But my guess is that: 1.With Apple's war with Google's Android, they went with MS to keep them happy. Why, could it be a deal that by letting Apple sell the iPhone to other carriers, along with iPad selling only with AT&T, that they might get any new design of the iPhone first before any of the other carriers. I have not see this ideal put forth that AT&T might getting a bit more then just iPad and that their is a bit more to it other then some more $$$ back..

Two: By ordering that "many" of MS phones (Both players MS and Apple), "try" to limit Google in some sort of way? What I would give to at least to know what is going on in their minds and how screwy a lot of it is... Would make a great TV show!

    Good Luck!

After seeing the screenshots and video demos, all I've gotta say is good luck with that! Win Phone 7 doesn't even compete with Android, let alone iOS...
