PS3 to get 3DS-like slider to control 3D levels

Sony is considering allowing gamers to adjust the level of 3D in an upcoming Sly Cooper series of PS3 games due in November. A controller-based slider will control this, letting users set a level of 3D they are most comfortable with, a Sony game producer said in an interview today. The control won't require a new gamepad, he said to Kotaku, but could instead be mapped into the analog stick, with a tilt of the remote adjusting the 3D depth.

The difference is necessary as standing in the wrong spot in front of a 3D TV may result in a double image and give the viewer a headache. Without such a control, users may have to change their sitting position, Sony reasoned.

A similar system is expected for the handheld Nintendo 3DS gaming system, which will also let users turn off the 3D effect altogether, though the PS3 is expected to do the same. The three Sly Cooper games were originally released for the PlayStation 2, but enhanced with 3D graphics. If the control proves a success in these games, it will likely find its way into other titles.
