White iPhone 4s delayed until 'later this year'

updated 08:45 am EDT, Fri July 23, 2010

Postponed from late July

White versions of the iPhone 4 will now only ship "later this year," a new Apple statement says. "White models of Apple's new iPhone 4 have continued to be more challenging to manufacture than we originally expected," the company claims. "The availability of the more popular iPhone 4 black models is not affected." The white option was most recently pegged as being available in late July.

The white iPhone 4 has had a troubled production history. It was learned early on that white models would not be ready for a June 24th launch; Apple initially pushed them to the second half of July. The multiple delays are thought to be attributable to contractor Lens Technology, which is allegedly having problems getting reliable opacity and thickness for the white paint. As few as three panels per hour may going out.

    Worst Launch Ever

I support Apple and think their products are fantastic. But this latest statement proves this has been the worst product launch for them ever. By the time the white ones come out, it will be about 6 months till the next iPhone.

Makes one want to hold off until the new ones get redone. Seriously, it looks like they over engineered the product since they can't get white paint to look good on their chosen glass.

    Material science

I'd love to hear a material scientist's take on this.

Clearly not an engineering problem but a materials problem.

    Re: Material science

It's a marketing and image problem. Apparently Apple decided they needed "white" and they needed "glass" and never bothered to ask the question "Um, can we actually get that in quantity?"

But at least no one will ever mention how 'cheap' a white iPhone feels with a plastic body! Of course, no one's mentioning how great it is in the new body, since no one can get one.

Apple should just market it as...

"The Limited Edition iPhone Blanc" and charge $50 more for it. Consumers will be willing to sell their mothers for it. It really is a shame the white iPhone strategy blew up in Apple's face. I guess that glass case isn't such a good idea for colors. What happens when an outsourcing company lies about production rates? I guess they could be charged penalties, but that would hardly offset the overall issue of supply shortages.

    Outsourcing company lies???

How can you blame the outsourcing company? It is Apple's responsibility to see justification of production. You can't pass the buck. Apple screwed up big time and their iPhone 4 rollout is a disaster. Yes they have sold lots of phones. How many phones could they really have sold without taking the PR hit that will affect future rollouts?

    really cartoon?

Worst product launch ever? Yeah, the continued incredible sales numbers of the black iPhone, and the pent-up demand for the white one really constitutes the "worst product launch ever". They are trying to fix the problem and make a quality product.

Tell me, would you rather have a phone that looks cheap and falls apart, or something that was done right?

If you can do better, please, feel free to apply to Apple.

    white is difficult

opacity is the key word here, seeing that glass is a non-porous surface the taming of the paint "type" is difficut if not critical when using layers; try to achive any acurate "value" while at the same time alowing for proper adhersion, well now, 'tis NOT an easy score.

Example: An experienced water colorist knows that to achieve accurate color / hue one must start with the faintest of chosen color and build it up with a minimum of 15 layers all of which need proper drying / curing time.

    Just some thoughts.
    Enjoy!
