Samsung UK ad pokes fun at iPhone's antenna

Samsung claims Galaxy S doesn't have antenna issue

Samsung UK took another shot at Apple today with a large ad in the Friday issue of the Metro newspaper. The spot uses a full signal bar to help spell the word "hello" and implies the Galaxy S doesn't have the iPhone 4's sensitivity to hand grip. Samsung had already claimed its phones didn't have such problems before.

The ad is somewhat contradictory, as users have already demonstrated that versions of the Galaxy S like T-Mobile's Vibrant can drop their signal when held tightly or in a certain way. Apple has argued that all smartphones suffer to some extent from these problems, though the iPhone 4's placement of the antenna in the external frame makes it more susceptible to being blocked than on Samsung's phone or others where the antenna is still kept inside. hello

Apple has traditionally used "Hello" in its ad to introduce new models, like the original Macintosh or the iMac, so it is somewhat associated with it.

    Good Journalism

I'm serious. By having the article on Samsung's ad and their claim and then inserting the video you've exposed the fallaciousness of what Samsung is saying. Nicely done.

I had no idea these companies are run

by children. The Galaxy S seems to be a very well-designed smartphone with lots of features to push and yet Samsung feels a need to resort to this type of tactic to sell their product. I'd say they're only opening up themselves for attack. Even Apple should have left out pointing fingers to other smartphones with signal issues. For Apple, it is was more of a defensive move, but Samsung isn't under any direct attack by Apple. These companies must really feel threatened by Apple.

playing it safe for a reason.

You would think companies would create more blatant ads left and right to mock the iPhone antenna issue. for example, several hands grabbing their phone at once and showing a strong signal; with a headline like "The phone that loves to be held." or "Any way you grab it - grab it fast". But I'm guessing all of these companies are putting out safe weak ads because they know their phone antennas actually CAN'T be held anyway you want and always perform optimally.

    their bars don't match.

Too bad they didn't use the phone's actual bar configuration.

    Can someone please explain...

How this advertisement is a shot at Apple? Because they display signal strength bars? A lot of assumptions going on here I think. Is there something I'm not seeing?

    Sorry

Maybe I'm retarded but I don't see how that was any way related to Apple.

    Re: Hello

So, if any ad uses the term 'hello', it's a jab at Apple?

This is so much not a jab at apple that, if that's what they were going for, they failed miserably. No mention of antennas at all. All they have is the bars in the word 'hello', which is more about linking it to the cell phone itself (since all phones have bars, are they jabbing at every phone?).

What would be better, for them to put just 2 bars in the title? Yeah, that's a selling point.
