Augen Gentouch78 takes on Apple through price
The online edition of a Kmart flyer has revealed plans for what could be an unusual entry into competition against Apple in the still young tablet market. The Augen Gentouch78 should run Android 2.1 on a seven-inch screen and will keep simple with just 2GB of internal storage and Wi-Fi alone for Internet access. At $150, though, it would cost less than a third the price of an iPad while offering many more features than a similarly priced Nook Wi-Fi.
The slate is due to arrive in Kmart stores later this week and is being accompanied by TheBook, an Alex-like reader with a single seven-inch LCD in place of the dual e-paper and LCD displays of the Spring Design model. It runs a custom version of Linux.
Most tablets shipping this year come from companies as small as Augen, such as ICD and Notion Ink. The largest competitors in the field are still just rumors, including a 10-inch Motorola tablet and a BlackBerry tablet. Analysts believe nearly all tablets will be iPads this year due to rivals' delays and Apple's much broader reach. [via Engadget]

I didn't really want a $150 competitor - $300 and not just by raising the price, I mean by beefing up the specs a bit.
Still, it's nice for Kmart to have an $150 tablet.
