Dell prices Streak at 549, sets Aero's ATT date
Dell today finally detailed its American launch plan for its Streak tablet. The device will be available for sale tomorrow but will be less expensive than the 3G-capable iPad when it goes on sale. An unlocked version that can be freely used with any GSM carrier will cost $549; a version locked to AT&T with a two-year contract will sell for $299.
The Android 1.6 device is considered Dell's closest competitor to the Apple tablet until the started and will give both expedited two-day shipping as well as the option of a Bluetooth headset at a 99-cent promo price.
The Texas PC builder also narrowed down the launch of the Aero, its first American smartphone. The design, now several months old, should reach AT&T on August 9. Pricing is low at $100 on a contract and $300 off, though the phone runs Android 1.6 and won't be upgraded to Android 2.x until later.

But it's also much smaller with a 5" screen vs. a 9.7" screen. Why wouldn't it cost less. It also ships with Android 1.6. That's like the iPad shipping with iOS 2.0.

The Etch A Sketch, a device slightly larger than Apple's iPad, is available for just $17.99. It comes in Classic Red or the new Hot Pink for all you ladies out there.
The Etch A Sketch hopes to edge out both Apple and Dell since it's device is not only larger than the others, but requires no contract, no battery and can be used anywhere in the world and by those of all ages.

OS 1.6, it definitely won't be running the, ahem, complete-internet Flash on launch. Hehe.
The most expensive component on the iPad is the 9.7 inch IPS display, so the Dell clearly wins the price war with a 5 inch LCD display. I don't think it's a bad device, but it falls into a somewhat awkward size category. Many say that the 4.3 inch smartphones are pushing the upper limit for pocketability. Maybe once it doesn't fit in a normal pocket it's time to take a bigger jump to say a 7 inch screen. I'm anxious to see how it works out. I certainly wouldn't say it's going to be a failure.

Of course, the iPad's name doesn't always have the best connotations :-). But why do I have a problem with the name Streak? Maybe because most of the meanings of this word aren't gadget-lust inspiring:
- A line, mark, smear, or band differentiated by color or texture from its surroundings.
- To run naked in public, especially as a prank.
- A brief run or stretch, as of luck.
- An element or trace, as of some quality or characteristic
- A strip, vein, or layer - fatty streaks
- A bacterial culture inoculated by drawing a bacteria-laden needle across the surface of a solid culture medium.
- The characteristic color of a mineral after it has been ground into a powder.
- Any of various viral diseases of plants characterized by the appearance of discolored stripes on the leaves or stems.
- To lighten (strands of hair) with a chemical preparation.

As a "bloody" streak is all it will be on the Technology Highway. This is DOA.
Barely bigger than an EVO with an old OS that may or may not get updated.
Who on Earth would buy such a device when there are so many better options out there in a slightly smaller (or if you like) significantly larger) form factor.
This product is 12-18 months too late.
