RIM likely to show BlackBerry 9800 at event

RIM this afternoon sent an invite to Electronista and others to attend a special "BlackBerry event" in New York City. The company provided few details but said it would involve both itself and AT&T. Most expect the gathering to focus on the BlackBerry 9800 touchscreen slider and its use of BlackBerry OS 6, though the Curve 9300 may also show.

AT&T's presence supports the claim as it's believed to be the US exclusive carrier for at least some time, and may ship the phone later in August.

The event is a critical one for RIM, as it has begun losing market share even as it reaches record high shipment levels. Much of the drop has been blamed on the rise of the iPhone and Android. Its US share may have been hardest hit, as Verizon has pushed BlackBerries aside as its halo phones in favor of Droid-badged phones from HTC and Motorola.
