ATT shops get demo units for new BlackBerry slider
AT&T today fueled beliefs that the BlackBerry 9800 could launch soon after a special event next week through the arrival of mystery displays. Nicknamed "hero" displays due to the importance of what they will hold, the all black, blue-lit tower boxes show little but have both AT&T's "rethink possible" slogan and "innovation comes to life" on the other. None of the staff, including managers, are being told of the contents.
Speculation, including from Gizmodo, is that the boxes when revealed will be special podiums to display the 9800 shortly after it's revealed on August 3. AT&T wouldn't use such a stand for the already-shipping iPhone 4, and none of its existing or upcoming Android devices have received enough publicity to merit a secret podium. Windows Phone 7 devices aren't officially due to arrive until closer to the fall.
AT&T hasn't confirmed any of the details surrounding the displays, but as the new BlackBerry touchscreen slider could be in stores as soon as August 15, it's unlikely the retail stands will remain secretive after the Tuesday gathering.
