Toshiba expands Cell Regza TVs with 3D, longer DVR recording

Toshiba Cell Regza X2 and XE2 arrive

Toshiba committed itself to its high-end TVs in large fashion on Wednesday by adding the full-size Cell Regza X2 and the Cell Regza Slim XE2. Both take advantage of the PS3-derived Cell chip's performance to enhance 3D. On top of displaying 3D, they can upscale standard definition 3D to near HD and even convert some 2D content to 3D by studying movement in the scene.

The sets still have the 3TB of TV recording space as the original X1 but now are no longer capped at 26 hours of footage per channel. The length now only depends on the channels themselves, Toshiba said. It's now possible as well to jump to the start of a show to watch even while it's in mid-recording.

Both the X2 and XE2 have LED backlighting that produces a high 9,000,000:1 contrast ratio as well as 240Hz LCD panels, DLNA media sharing support and USB connections for media sharing from local storage. The XE2 models focus on a thinner body but are in many cases identical.

The TVs should launch first in Japan. Just one, 55-inch X2 model will be available and will ship at the end of October. The XE2 models will come in both 55- and 46-inch models and will arrive earlier, at the start of October. Like many local products, either will have open pricing on the Japanese market; it's unknown how the models will reach the US if at all.
