App approaches Kindle hardware features

Amazon has released an update to its Kindle app for the iPhone and iPad. Version 2.2 adds a variety of new features, such as instant word lookup that quickly finds definitions for highlighted words. The included dictionary provides over 250,000 entries and definitions, however users can also choose to look up content on Google or Wikipedia.

Users can now search inside the book on iPad, while the search function has been improved on the iPhone and iPod touch. Devices running iOS 4 can also take advantage of multitasking capabilities to quickly move between different apps.

The App Store offering is quickly bridging the gap with Amazon's own Kindle hardware. The latest Kindle app also matches the functionality of Apple's own iBooks app, which recently gained new search functions and support for audio or video content.

Kindle 2.2 is now available as a free download from the App Store.
