Nintendo sets date to unveil 3DS launch date
Nintendo in an unusual step today said it would reveal the launch date of the 3DS on September 29. The company didn't provide more details but hinted through the timing that the gaming system might ship before 2011. The company has often shipped DS models to Japan in the fall and brought them to North America in the spring.
The console is the first major redesign of a Nintendo handheld since the original DS in 2004 and has DMP's new Pica200 graphics processor to produce both 3D visuals and more detailed graphics as a whole. It now has a much larger 3.5-inch top display, an analog control pad and a gyroscope for tilt-sensitive gameplay. Internet access will get better through a persistent Wi-Fi connection that can download in the background.
Nintendo's pricing is uncertain, but it's likely to try and keep the console at or below $200 to avoid competing too closely with Apple's iPod touch and Sony's PSP Go.
