Apple confirms 12-core Mac Pro sale date

Apple has confirmed that it will start selling the new Mac Pro on August 9. Phone customers are being told the option will be a true order campaign and not a pre-order, though it's not known whether retail stores will have the workstations the same day. It's also uncertain how quickly Apple will ship online orders.

The reasons for delaying the start of sales from the outset were never explained by Apple, though it's believed Intel had trouble shipping six-core Xeons in large enough quantities that Apple, Dell, HP and other large computer builders could use them. Intel has faced tight supply of some of its non-mainstream 32 nanometer chips, such as its ultra-low voltage mobile processors.

All stock configurations of the Mac Pro come with quad-core Xeons, including the single-processor $2,499 base 2.8GHz model and the $3,499 dual-chip 2.4GHz system. Six cores will require a build-to-order system. [via MacRumors]

Maybe they aren't ready to ship them?

This may be the shortest-lived Mac Pro ever

We'll see how long this version is going to last. The previous version was more than 17 months (3/3/2009-8/6/2010). The one that follows it will definitely last more than six months, especially if you consider Intel's processor cycle.
