Sprint, Clear bring 4G to cities in three states

Wireless provider Sprint and its 4G partner Clear on Monday said they have expanded the network coverage of their WiMAX network to some cities in California, Delaware, Florida and Michigan. The service launches today in Modesto and Stockton in California; Jacksonville in Florida; Wilmington, Delaware; and Grand Rapids, Michigan. The 4G service on either network provides about 3Mbps to 6Mbps in real-world downstream speeds.

The only handset out thus far that supports the 4G network is Sprint's Evo 4G, with the upcoming Samsung Epic 4G set to arrive later in August. The Overdrive 3G/4G Mobile Hotspot lets users create a 4G hotspot anywhere.

Releases of Sprint and Clear 4G are still due in Boston, Miami, New York and Los Angeles before year's end.
