Vonage launches Mobile app for Facebook calling

VoIP service provider Vonage on Wednesday announced it has released a free Vonage Mobile app for Facebook. The app will let users who have it make free cellphone calls to each other, anywhere in the world. The calls can be made directly from the friends list and with a single touch.

The app is available for iPhones, iPod touch players and Android devices. It works either over Wi-Fi or cellular networks in many countries. The app imports current Facebook contacts, and the receiving friend's profile picture and status update are displayed on the screen.

The app is described as available today in the App Store, Android Market and the Vonage fan page on Facebook, although the App Store title hasn't been updated. Users need to enter their Facebook ID and password only once, and all friends who also have the app will have a Vonage logo next to their name. Phones will ring even if the Vonage app is closed.

Vonage promises to expand the service to include integrated voice and messaging services, though details are scarce.
