Microsoft launches 'PC versus Mac' site

Touts advantages like Blu-ray, product variety

As part of a new marketing effort, Microsoft has launched a webpage promoting the advantages of PCs over Macs. The page touts Windows 7-based PCs as "designed for work and play," having several features Macs go without. Macs cannot play Blu-ray movies, for example, and have a much smaller list of A-list games to choose from.

PCs are also described as better for productivity, having more broadly supported document formats, and more software to choose from. A major emphasis of the page is customization, as Microsoft points out that there are more built-in options in buying a PC, such as TV tuners, different colors and in some cases 3G modems. The page does make some contestable claims however, such as implying that Mac owners must pay $99 a year for MobileMe in order to play music and video hosted on a remote computer.

Apple has for several years employed a similar attack strategy. The company's "Switch" ads were eventually replaced with the "Get a Mac" campaign, which lasted for some time before being shut down in May. Apple has since toned down anti-Windows rhetoric, though it continues to address the downsides of PCs through means like its "Why you'll love a Mac" page.

    Blu-Ray is so last century

With Blu-Ray player in the $99 range, why not just hook it up to a 40" screen and be done with it?

Spending $ on a computer to do mindless activity is a silly thing to do.

The horses have long ago been out of the barn

And Microsoft is just now noticing that the barn doors should be closed.

    Pathetic.

    Ho ho ho

After Dell's crazy comparison, MS comes to the fore with yet another pathetic attempt at stopping its own slow death...guys, you're the UNDERDOGS now...get used to it. ;)

    LOL!

I'm still laughing....sorry, can't think of anything to say... I'm still trying to get past this little blurb on the site...

Intuitive, familiar, and easy to use, PCs do what you want: they just work."

Who watches disc-based movies on their computer? I want a large screen with my surround sound. But Windows is a good choice if you want clock cycles wasted on anti-malware/virus software.

    I like how...

...they completely ignore that Office for Mac exists, when it is convenient for them to do so:

"If you use Apple's productivity suite, sharing files with PC users can be tricky. Your documents might not look right and your spreadsheets might not calculate correctly."

    Two points

Having a Blue-Ray player would be nice if you have the disc for home and want to take it with you on a trip.

Apple should ship VGA dongles. They started shipping the DVI one, surely they recognize the need.

Other than those two, the rest of their comparison is BS.

Pardon me, but iTunes remote limits are exactly the same on Win as on Mac.

BluRay? Why, when I can get iTunes in HD and NetFlix in SD - on a 15 inch screen, who cares about BluRay?

Colors? MS makes things in colors? This from the company that made their sole music player in pig-mud brown only?

I love the "compare editions" tab - the one where it shows you the several hundred-plus dollar version of windows you want. Much preferable to the $29 MacOS that comes fully loaded, eh?

"Things just don't work the same way on Macs if you're used to a PC. For example, the mouse works differently."

Yeah, it tracks motion and handles interrupts the way it should - something that hasn't been fixed since Win 3.0

"many PCs running Windows 7 support Touch, so you can browse online newspapers, flick through photo albums, and shuffle files and folders—using nothing but your fingers. PCs with a fingerprint reader even let you log in with just a swipe of your finger."

Gosh, you'd have to have a trackpad to do that on a mac - oh, wait... And fingerprints - great - so now someone has to steal my laptop and sever my finger. I can't wait for the new Windows 7 online feature - the "Find My Finger" app.

"Apple's productivity suite file formats won't open in Microsoft Office on PCs. This can be a real hassle for Mac users sharing work documents with PC users."

Yeah, God forbid you learn the long sequence of steps needed to click "Save Copy"... that's right there on the save dialog of iWork...

"If there's a Mac version of a program you need, you'll have to buy it again and relearn how to use it on a Mac."

Yes, because in CS4 for the Mac, the menus are on the bottom of the screen, upside down, in Russian and blink annoyingly.

Someone got paid to make that site. Astounding.
