Motorola chief unfazed by prospect of Verizon iPhone

Motorola's Jha doesn't expect VZ iPhone to hurt

Motorola chief Sanjay Jha at an Oppenheimer technology conference yesterday dismissed the potential threat of a Verizon iPhone. He explained to Fierce Wireless and others in attendance that he was "comfortable with the dynamic that would create" and didn't see any reason for Verizon to back away from supporting Motorola's Droid phones. The just recently discontinued original Droid was still selling out even towards the end of its life, and new models were likely to continue the trend.

"The Droid X is every bit as good as iPhone," Jha said. "I don't think the value we bring to Verizon becomes any less important when the iPhone is there."

He added that AT&T losing iPhone exclusivity would give it a strong incentive to have other smartphones, including Motorola's. Only the Backflip has reached AT&T so far, but the carrier has already taken to high-end Android phones such as the Samsung Captivate.

Motorola has been enjoying a rise in smartphone sales in the several months since switching to Android, but its heavy dependence on Verizon has been considered both an asset and a liability. The carrier has been Motorola's strongest promoter and went so far as to run a special Times Square promo. It has nonetheless limited Motorola's reach at the high end and isn't guaranteed. Verizon trumpeted the Droid line at the conscious expense of RIM, in at least two occasions burying new BlackBerry launches by putting them on the same day as much higher-profile Android releases.

    Point?

Why should Motorola be "fazed"? There's room for both the Droid(s) and the iPhone. One phone doesn't suit everyone.

They will be "fazed" severely. The only reason their smart phone sales haven't crashed completely is they've had people that for whatever reason need to stick with Verizon but want an iPhone-like experience. Once they can get an actual iPhone and keep their carrier it will "faze" the h*** out of their bottom line.

Pick up a Droid X, Evo 4G, or Droid 2 (out now) use it for a few weeks/months, and then say that. There's only going to be better handsets, better Android OS updates, better features and better user experiences from here on in.

With all this competiton and innovation, the winner here is the consumer. The gap between iPhone and Android is closing fast my friend. And as I have said before, there's room for both platforms as not one phone will be right for everyone.

I was addressing your point that Motorola wouldn't be fazed by the iPhone coming to the carriers where they (motorola) have been free from directly competing with the iPhone. Motorola is losing market share in every category including smart phones, especially where they compete directly with Apple on At&t. I don't think it will be any different on other networks and that is going to "faze" their bottom line.

Besides, what makes you think I haven"t used these other phones? Can you conceive the fact that someone could use one of these iPhone knock-offs and not be terribly impressed? I test many of these all the time, often before they are released. Some have interesting features that aren"t part of the iPhone but most are really following what Apple is creating. I do see why some people are drawn to the android or future windows mobile phones, but the average consumer will choose the iPhone until you see some real innovation from the other phone makers.
