RIM intros official BlackBerry Podcasts app
BlackBerry smartphones got official podcast support of their own today through the launch of BlackBerry Podcasts. The native app gives support for browsing and downloading podcasts in audio or video. Subscriptions also work, and will both download new episodes in the background and send alerts when new episodes are ready.
The app downloads shows over 3G and Wi-Fi and will work with most any modern BlackBerry, including all variants of the Bold, Curve, Pearl, Storm and Tour. The low amount of included memory with Curve, Pearl and Tour phones will need a microSD card, RIM said. Most phones can download Podcasts through App World, but BlackBerry Torch users will find it built-in when the phone ships tomorrow.
RIM is one of the last modern major smartphone makers to have a readily available podcast option. Apple added support for podcasts at the end of 2008, while Android has had third-party apps that handle the task.
