More Canon details: 60D body, G12 coming, LaForet teaser

Canon 60D and camera plans detailed in full

Canon's pre-Photokina camera launches may have been elaborated almost in full today through a string of leaks. One tip focusing on the often rumored EOS 60D suggested to Canon Rumors that it will use a plastic body slightly smaller than the 50D. While not as durable as magnesium, the shell would keep the price to just $200 or $300 above the price of a Rebel T2i and would have a better grip.

Supporting the notion of new DSLR updates inbound, well-known pro photographer Vincent LaForet hinted that a large amount of gear-related announcements will come in "2-4 weeks." Some of this would relate to non-Canon gear and appears to include an important iPad and iPhone app project, but he also suggested it would be larger than previous Canon unveilings. The scale would be larger than that of Reverie, the movie LaForet made to show off DSLR video with the EOS 5D Mark II, and Nocturne, the clip made to show the EOS 1D Mark IV's low-light video abilities.

Besides the 60D, possibilities attached to LaForet's work could involve a full-frame 1Ds Mark IV, a 5D Mark III or rough equivalents to each.

Regular compact cameras will also be getting significant upgrades based on a second, "for sure" rumor from CR. The highlight, the PowerShot G series, would get what is by now its yearly upgrade in the G12 and would once again focus on image quality over sheer resolution. Purportedly, Canon will switch the sensor from CCD to an even more light-sensitive CMOS and will finally give the series HD video recording after years of standard definition.

The S95 would replace Canon's cheaper but cult favorite S90 and would have the G12's CMOS sensor and HD in a smaller body.

Of the remaining updates expected to come, the rest would be iterative upgrades to long-zoom models. The SX30 would replace both the SX1 and SX20 at the same time and may switch from AA batteries to a lithium-ion pack. The SX130 would be a direct upgrade to the SX120, and an as yet unnamed compact 10X zoom is rumored due.

More details are likely to come by an unconfirmed August 26 event and will almost certainly come before September 21, when the Photokina show begins in Germany.
