Axon debuts tablet geared for Mac OS X installation

updated 11:00 pm EDT, Thu August 12, 2010

Components configured for Mac OS X

Axon Logic is finally ready to take pre-orders for its Haptic tablet designed for 'hackintosh' Mac OS X installation. Although the company officially warns against installing Mac OS X due to licensing restrictions, the tablet is said to be specifically built for compatibility with any Darwin-based operating systems such as Apple's latest Snow Leopard release and earlier versions of Mac OS X.

The tablet features a 10-inch touchscreen with 1024x600 resolution, while a 1.6GHz Atom CPU is paired with 2GB of RAM and a 3000mAh battery. The device also provides several USB ports, a 3G SIM slot, 320GB hard drive, webcam, VGA port, Ethernet jack and built-in speaker.

Customers can now pre-order the Haptic for $750. Operating systems such as Windows or Mac OS X must be purchased separately. The company also sells a CDMA 3G card, USB Bluetooth dongle, and Bluetooth GPS receiver, among other accessories. [via CrunchGear]

    Wonder

Wonder how much money they could possibly make off this. Could you really install OS X on this thin without much trouble?

    Re: Psystar II

This is completely different. Psystar sold computers with OS X installed. They sold computers advertising OS X.

These guys are explicitly telling you not to install OS X (psst, although it will work) because of issues with the license.

There's nothing Apple can do to stop a company from selling a computer that can run OS X. They can only stop a company saying they support OS X.

FAIL again. OS X is an Apple trademark, they cannot use it to advertise their own products.

Psystar tried to use OS X trademark and failed in court.

Right, and they ARE NOT using OS X to advertise their own product. No where on their page do they even use the term OS X. They say that it can run "any" Darwin OS. Last I checked, Darwin was an open sourced OS. Nothing wrong there.

The only thing you can argue is that they should really get that Apple logo off their screen. But I don't know the darwin rules and whether the logo can be used for that.

And my main point is valid. Apple cannot stop anyone from selling a computer or other device that can run OS X, unless that company specifically cracks a patented piece of apple technology (for example, making an android phone that uses a chip that mimics an iPhone, allowing you to install the iOS on it, could be seen as actionable).

There are companies out there now (and have been for years) that sell computers that can run OS X. h***, there's companies that will sell you computers with the appropriate hackintosh EFI code so it will run it out of the box (no need for an extra USB key with the hackintosh code on it). ExpressHD is one of them (renamed a while ago to something else).

Psystar tried to use OS X trademark and failed in court.

Really? Gee, I should have mentioned that they used the OS X name. Oh, wait, I did!

Sure Apple can stop this from running OS X

    Sure there is:

    - at the technical level, Apple can modify OS X so it no longer supports Atom CPU's. They can modify Software Update so that it no longer provides updates to systems with Atom CPU's. They can turn on the signed code requirement in Mac OS and withdraw Axon's developer license so their touch drivers no longer run

    - at the legal level, just threatening to sue Axon probably shuts this down

    - at the business level, they could buy Axon with cash and not even notice it, and then shut them down.

I placed a Pre Order Right Away...

Just incase this does come to market, and I have an iPad and love it. I just need a full OSX running on the Pad to have an unrestricted use of a REAL Photoshop running to work on my Photos Live while I shoot with my Canon WFT. I now use a DELL Mini9 which is the same CPU as this tablet, and I loaded for my personal use OSX 10.6. This works Great! and I've had no problems at all doing the load on the Mini9. I need something super light weight to do this, and at the time the mini9 fit in this need. I do get strange looks sometimes when someone see the Dell Logo, and then the Mac OSX running on the screen. Do I go out of my way to show this to anyone? No NEVER.

I have 2 Axiotron Modbooks too, their just to heavy to use and hold, and they cook my arm from holding them to long. Plus the Modbook is a dead product line anyway, as Apple has killed off the only Macbook that was abled to be converted to a Modbook. I would have killed to have that Modbook Pro they were releasing for the past 15 months, and now delayed again for another 6 months.

I do believe that Apple needs to build a Super iPad with a real OSX on it, and not just a limited closed door version. I know I'd pay big bucks for something like that, I'm willing to pay over $5000 for a Modbook Pro already. It might be thought of as a nitch product line, but that's what apple said about a Tablet version of a Mac for 3 years. Look how the iPad has taken over the world already, I never put mine down unless I need a real Photo Editor.
