Intel buying Texas Instruments cable modem arm
Chipmaker Intel on Monday revealed that it is in the process of acquiring Texas Instruments' (TI) cable modem products. The deal will allow Intel to bring out cable set-top boxes and related electronics that may be powered by Atom processors usually found in netbooks. The plan is to make TI's Puma product line compatible with the DOCSIS cable Internet standard and bring more advanced and capable set-tops to customers.
TI cable modem employees were given offers to join Intel's Digital Home Group in their home countries, with the majority located in Israel. The deal, which is expected to be closed this fall, is subject to approval by regulatory bodies.
While not detailed, the acquisition may play into Google TV, where Intel is a key partner. Cable modem support would let the media hub serve both as the Internet gateway for the home as well as provide the Android-based OS for a cable TV feed.
