Meizu chief wants Retina Display for M9

Meizu chief Jack Wong has set out plans to match Apple once again in a recent post on his company's forums. He now expects the next phone, the M9, to use a 3.54-inch, 960x640 screen very similar if not identical to the iPhone 4's. It would seem familiar most other areas as well with a 1GHz processor, 512MB of RAM and multi-touch.

The touch-only phone will still use Android with Meizu's custom experience on top but would move directly to Android 2.2. Some details are still unknown, but the M9 should have an upgraded Wi-Fi module and 3D graphics acceleration. The new UI (seen below) is closer to the M8's shipping platform and is less like the iPhone or Android UIs it was originally meant to imitate.

Despite an upgrade of the specs, the M9 is reportedly still slated for October and is likely to ship to Wong's native China first. Other countries have received the M8 in the past, but it's unknown how soon Meizu plans to expand.

Meizu is well-known for being one of the most enthusiastic cloners of Apple's design, promising the M8 barely weeks after Apple had shown the first device. It did ship and had at least some success with the M8, but the company is known for constantly changing phone features until the very late stage of production and of missing deadlines, as the M8 didn't ship until late 2008. Apple hasn't ever taken action against Meizu, but the Chinese firm's decision to create a more original UI has helped it avoid legal action. [via MeizuMe]

    non-story

you can't copyright spec's on a phone, or trademark them, or expect someone not to match them, or do better.

it just isn't a story, if it runs Android 2.2 and a custom interface, then its another Android phone, not an iPhone copy.

So many people talking about clone's - but a touch only phone with rounded corners, does not an iPhone make - if it was running a bootleg copy of iOS 4 - that would be a case of infringement. Otherwise, its probably not only not illegal - but usually referred to as 'the free enterprise system' also know as capitalism.

    Why not an 8-track

That picture of a record on the media player really yells "technology". Why not use an 8-track since it's closer to the shape of the screen? I'd like to see the phones keypad for dialing - does it mimic a rotary phone?
