AIR 2.5 due for powerful Android phones this fall

Adobe AIR will become publicly available for Android handsets this fall via the Android Market, the company revealed during a recent presentation. According to eyewitnesses from Engadget, an initial number of apps will also be there at the same time and this will be part of the AIR 2.5 release. Developers will have access to the phone's camera, microphone, accelerometer and GPS sensor.

AIR 2.5 would also grant use of the hardware GPU acceleration and multi-touch input. As with Flash, though, only high-end Android smartphones will be capable of supporting AIR, as an ARMv7 or faster processor is required, along with OpenGL ES 2.0 graphics acceleration and Android 2.2. A rule of thumb is to assume that a phone which can handle Flash 10.1 can also support AIR, Adobe said.

At the same time, Adobe said it is considering bringing AIR 2.5 to Google TV set-tops, although this would need Android code optimized for Intel's Atom rather than ARM.
