Canon Pixma MG8120, MG6120 and EOS 7D Studio debut
Canon as a prelude to its larger releases next week put out two new photo all-in-one printers and a rare specialized DSLR. Together, the Pixma MG6120 and its MG8120 sibling have a new interface that uses capacitive touch instead of resistive for input. While now very common in phones, it's rare in printers and is touted by Canon as speeding up common tasks.
Both printers tie into a Canon-only printing mode for movies. Full HD Movie Print lets owners of Canon DSLRs or compacts scrub through footange to pick out an individual frame from videos up to 1080p and print them as though they were photos. Either Pixma can pull images from Flickr and save the trouble of having to move a local copy of a photo already posted online.
The pair produce images as dense as 9600x2400 and produce a typical four-by-six inch printout in about 20 seconds. Either carries 802.11n Wi-Fi for local network and Flickr printing. The MG8120 claims the lead by adding a film adapter to convert old captures and supports full duplex copying printing and paper feeds. Canon should be shipping both today at prices of $200 for the MG6120 and $300 for the MG8120.
Pros have been served today by a unique Studio Version of the EOS 7D. The DSLR has four gradations of feature locks to suit it to a family photographer or others that may have to share the camera with others. It can prevent accidental settings changes that would hurt the output and has a password system to guard against more deliberate tweaks.
It can also now read barcodes to scan their info into the EXIF metadata and optionally bundles a special version of WFT-E5A adapter to put photos on the network. Earlier versions of the adapter can be flash upgraded at the Canon factory, but it disables GPS geotagging.
Canon is selling a version of the EOS 7D Studio Version with the adapter but no lens for $2,599. Those who only need the core Studio Version camera can buy a body for $1,829. They should be available today but need to be specially ordered.
