Canon G12 details briefly go live, show modest update

updated 05:25 pm EDT, Thu August 19, 2010

Canon G12 to mostly add HD video and HDR

Although missing in Canon's PowerShot updates this morning, the G12 was inadvertently confirmed today by an article (since pulled) on CNET Asia. The pro point-and-shoot is a direct parallel to the S95 and primarily expands the G11 with 720p video recording as well as the high dynamic range (HDR) mode that composites shots together. The 5X, 28-140mm equivalent f2.8 lens will be upgraded to Hybrid IS to counteract blur triggered by angle or shift shaking.

Contrary to rumors, the camera should still keep its optical viewfinder and a flash fixed in the body. The similarity will give it dedicated dials for exposure and ISO. A 10-megapixel CCD sensor friendly to low light and a 2.8-inch swiveling LCD should continue on into the new camera.

Canon hasn't said when the G12 will arrive, but an August 26 event may bring the camera along with the repeatedly rumored EOS 60D DSLR. [via Canon Rumors]
