Samsung S2 portable drives get USB 3.0 interface

Samsung on Thursday introduced a new family of portable hard drives, the S2 Portable 3.0. The 2.5-inch drives sport an integrated USB 3.0 interface and have 7,200RPM spindle speeds to deliver fast performance. The interface is more than 10 times faster than USB 2.0 speeds, at 5Gbps compared to 480Mbps.

The drives ship with software that includes Samsung Auto Backup, SecretZone and SafetyKey for securing data. The faster performance translates into lower power consumption as well, and the devices have smaller cases thanks to the use of the USB 3.0 technology.

The drives will ship to European Union countries in either 320GB or 640GB capacities later in August, though prices have not been revealed. When or if they will arrive in North America hasn't been announced.
