3D internet for mobile devices planned

Intel and Nokia have teamed to establish a research laboratory dedicated to developing 3D interfaces for mobile devices. The new facility will be based in Oulu, Finland and will tap local talent pools to source between twenty and thirty researchers as part of the three-year project. Looking to harness the graphics firepower in new mobile devices, the team is aiming to create a more ‘immersive’ Internet experience.

The Intel and Nokia Joint Innovation Center will be based on the campus of the University of Oulu, which is a hub of technology development in Europe. The local research community has a reputation in the 3D field; the area spawned the open-source virtual reality platform realXtend.

An example of the realXtend platform is included here for interest's sake, and may give an indication of the direction that Intel and Nokia are heading.
