Sony announces discounted PS3, PSP warranties

Sony announced on Tuesday that PlayStation Plus subscribers will have a 25 percent discount on the PlayStation Protection Plan. The extended service plan for the PS3 and portable PSP lengthens the devices' standard one-year warranty by one or two years. They also eliminate shipping and most of the other secondary costs associated with getting the consoles fixed.

Users can download the PS3 extended warranty plans directly from the PlayStation Store, with a two-year extended warranty priced at $45 for Plus subscribers rather than the regular $60. A one-year plan is reduced from the regular $45 to $33.75 and the PS3 needs to be within its original one-year manufacturer's warranty period.

The PSP plans cost Plus subscribers $22.50 and $30, down from $30 and $40, respectively, for the one-year and two-year extended plans.
PlayStation Plus was introduced nearly three months ago, and offers subscribers added free games, early access betas and Qore.
