PS4 to have optical drive, says CEO Kaz Hirai

Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai said the next-generation PlayStation will not rely solely on software downloads and give up an optical drive, just like the controversial PSP Go. Speaking in an interview with MCV UK, Hirai said Sony's business will always require a physical medium. He goes on to say that having all software being available as a download even in ten years is "taking it a little bit to the extreme."

"We do business in parts of the world where network infrastructure isn’t as robust as one would hope," Hirai also said.

Sony's portable PSP Go console was the first to rely on download-only software, which is believed to have hurt its sales. Even certain retailers did not want to carry the console as they would not be able to make money by selling new and used games.
