LG Optimus Pad takes some cues from older iPhones

LG's promised Optimus Pad tablet has leaked out through an LG-run dealer show in Belgium. The design has a tall ratio like the Samsung Galaxy Tab but, from Multimediawereld's photos, takes some of its design cues from older iPhones with a chrome bezel and a rounded shell. It also claims the tablet is "thinner and lighter" with "superior performance" to other tablets, alluding to the iPad, though doesn't say how.

Little is known about what the device will entail other than that it will use Android, although the teaser promises "many 'firsts'" for the category. Marketing VP Chang Ma previously argued that the Optimus Pad would be more useful for creating content rather than just consuming it, but there's no clue as to whether it will involve any special apps or simply the use of off-the-shelf Android titles. Support for 3G is likely.

The slate is due to arrive by the end of the year and should have a worldwide launch, making it the second known competitor to the iPad on a global scale besides the Galaxy Tab. Instead of following Apple's model of unlocked sales, Samsung and likely LG as well will focus on subsidized carrier sales rather than unlocked or Wi-Fi only versions. [via NetbookNews]
