Current market share sits at 17% for Android
Sony Ericsson reportedly announced that it intends to become the world's top producer of Android-based smartphones, according to a BusinessWeek report. CEO Bert Nordberg claims the company has established a 17 percent share in the Android market, while the leader currently holds a 23 percent stake.
Although Nordberg declined to identify the current company that leads Android sales, the company competes directly with rivals HTC, Motorola and Samsung. Sony Ericsson currently has a more limited Android selection than its competition, with sales limited to the XPERIA X10, X10 mini, and X10 mini pro. The company's next Android phone, the X8, has yet to arrive on the market.
A separate analyst report suggests the London-based company has been comparatively slow to engage the smartphone market. The transition has resulted in reduced market share in the overall mobile market for the second quarter of the year, while rivals HTC and Samsung continue to grow.
