Device paired with entry-level price
Samsung appears to be readying a new Android handset, the Gem, which had recently appeared in a leaked roadmap for Verizon. The entry-level device has been listed in a purported buyer's guide from Best Buy, posted by Engadget. The Gem likely serves as a cheaper alternative to the Galaxy S-series Fascinate, which is also due sometime in the next few weeks at Verizon.
The buyer's guide points to Android 2.1 paired with TouchWiz 3.0 and Swipe for the virtual keyboard. The handset is also outfitted with a 3.2-megapixel camera, GPS, Wi-Fi, and a microSD slot. It is unclear if the company is planning on including a free memory card.
The Gem is expected to be launched sometime in September. Pricing remains unknown, although it will likely fall below the Fascinate.
