Philips intros 3D-capable Cinema 21:9 TV

Philips ultra-wide Cinema TV goes 3D
Philips used the opening of the IFA technology show to upgrade its Cinema 21:9 line to 3D. The 3D Cinema 21:9 Platinum doubles the LCD panel refresh to 400Hz to support the added depth with stereoscopic glasses. It's slightly larger than the original at 58 inches and will be unique in providing 3D at the same aspect ratio as most theaters.
The design continues to output at 2560x1080 and has the unique option of using Net TV browsing side-by-side with a picture when watching TV or other material at a narrower aspect ratio. Philips' experience in lighting comes into play as the set can use its Ambilight background lighting to either ease the strain of looking at the set in the dark or change colors to match the few movies that support the technology.
In Europe, the 3D Cinema 21:9 Platinum will carry a premium price of 4,000 euros ($5,133) and will ship to at least the UK before the end of this month. Philips does ship TVs to the US, but it hasn't brought the 21:9 displays to the country so far.
