Google to hold search event Sept 8 at art museum

Google sparked curiosity on Friday by sending out an invitation to Electronista and other members of the press for a special event on September 8. The invite is brief and teases a showing off of Google's "latest technological innovation" and an "inside look at the evolution of Google search." Somewhat unusually, the event is being held at San Francisco's Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and will have well-known search VP Marissa Mayer as well as key software engineers.

The art angle may simply be a convenient choice of venue but may also play into the nature of what's shown. Google's image-based search app, Goggles, is a staple part of Android and was recently teased for an iPhone launch before the end of the year. It might not merit a full event, but it could be a part of a larger context.

Other candidates could include a more straightforward feature addition to image search, although it was just recently overhauled; rumors have floated of improvements to art-specific searching.
