BitTorrent to bring open source apps to client

BitTorrent on Thursday began rolling out its Release Candidate 7.1 client, which includes built-in apps. These will allow developers to create their own programs for the platform. The same software will be distributed to all 14 million BitTorrent Mainline users over the next month.

The initial batch of apps includes 11 free samples such as BitDefender-powered Virus Guard, TorrentTweet, uMap and more. These same ones were preloaded onto the beta version of BitTorrent's μTorrent product, which should be out of beta until later this year. These apps are JavaScript-based and open-source, as is the SDK needed to develop them. They use HTML and CSS for rendering and can interact with other Web services and content.

The final stable release of BitTorrent should be out within one or two weeks.
