App focus growing amongst smartphones

iPhone owners tend to have the most apps installed in terms of the smartphone market, says Nielsen. The research group recently surveyed about 4,000 people, and found that iPhone users have an average of 40 apps installed. The number compares against 25 for Android users, and just 14 for BlackBerry owners. All of the figures are up since December however, indicating a growing general interest in apps.

Games are so far dominating the field, as 61 percent of people polled had downloaded at least one during a 30-day timespan. Weather apps came in second at 55 percent, while mapping and search apps slotted in at 50 percent. Closing out the top five categories were social networking with 49 percent, and music with 42.
