G2 pre-orders start September 10
In advance of a formal announcement by T-Mobile, Best Buy today confirmed that the T-Mobile G2 will launch in stores on October 6 for $200 with a new two-year activation. They will be taking pre-orders from today, although customers must visit a Best Buy or Best Buy Mobile stand-alone store to secure their device. At the time of writing, T-Mobile’s own site still only states that the anticipated device will be available for pre-order "starting later this month."
The G2 is the first official reference Android phone to be sold directly through T-Mobile since the G1 first shipped in 2008 and will have an untouched Android 2.2 install out of the box. It will share familiar QWERTY slider design, but add HSPA+ 3G support for speeds twice as fast as T-Mobile's other phones, at 14.4Mbps. A larger 3.7-inch screen, a five-megapixel camera, an optical trackpad and multi-touch are its most conspicuous upgrades over the old model.
